About

I became a painter in my early 70’s following retirement. In the past I had a strong interest in Art History and took many photography classes but could never have imagined then that I would become a painter. Initially I turned to art in order to keep my brain active after a being diagnosed with a serious health condition.  Later I was drawn further into painting by the love of mixing colors and creating images with various layers and textures.  I see images and colors in my mind that I feel a need to create on paper or canvas.

Currently I work in oil, acrylic, Sumi ink and watercolor to create a variety of images using scraps of paper, cardboard or pieces of cut up canvas I create new multidimensional effects. I love to manipulate color to produce harmony or discord and sometimes both.

As a museum curator I was exposed to a great deal of Native American and African art and it influences most of what I produce. I have always had a love of Japanese traditional art and poetry as well.   My works in Sumi ink use various shades of black ink with splashes of watercolor to create objects that vary from agitating and sharp to fun and whimsical.  On the other hand, by mixing the two together, I can create soft colors flowing across the canvas.

My small collages utilize images from old magazines and other sources to combine in funny and unusual ways by placing completely unrelated subjects together into a new concept.  Objects or people often morph into something entirely unique and nothing close to their original form.
